The Art of István Sándorfi
Mar 2, 2011
István Sándorfi was born in 1948 in Budapest, Hungary. From the age of ten he lived in Paris, where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. Sandorfi died in December, 2007.
Sándorfi’s paintings are fascinating in their ‘unfinished’ states. Their beauty not only lies in their realism, but in the manner in which they appear imperfect. Phantasmal imagery and bleeding paint come alive in his works of seemingly mundane events. Sandorfi’s painting style blends a meticulous realistic technique with elements of surrealism. His work has been featured for the past three decades in important European galleries including Isy Brachot, Brussels. His provocative draped figures and still lifes appear in important private collections and museums on several continents, notably Centre Georges Pompidou, Musee de la Ville de Paris, Kunsthalle in Nuremberg, and the Taiwan Museum of Art, among others. A show at the Arnot Museum in upstate New York featured two of his recent paintings. Art Fairs at which his works have been exhibited include FIAC, Basel, Ghent, Art Miami, ArtFair Seattle, and New York’s International 20th Century Arts Fair.
He preferred to paint at night, but each day goes to bed later than the day before, thus living in a perpetual time lag, which sidelines him from any social life. Sandorfi reconciles this isolation with his family circle (he is the father of two girls, Ange and Eve) and his emotional life, thereby maintaining a delicate and studied balance between his life and his work.
“I never had the impression that I really knew how to paint, not in the past, not now. If you paint, you are simply never satisfied.” ~ István Sándorfi

John McEnroe
Feb 28, 2011
Well, I’m finished with the illustration for the Tennis Magazine Commission. I’m just waiting until tomorrow morning when they get into work to get the final approval. Tonight I have John McEnroe for you. I put a lot of detail work into this one, so be sure and view it at full resolution. I worked for a good while painting the hair. Extremely fine detail on the hair down to the tiny hairs on his ears. I even did a little subtle dental work on him. Hope you like it.
I hope you enjoyed. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!
Sneak Peek at Tennis Magazine Job
Feb 26, 2011
Working away on the Tennis magazine commission all day today. I’m about 60% complete and I’m beat so I’m headed to bed. Just wanted to post a little teaser. I will deliver this job tomorrow, hopefully early enough to start something else. I have a bunch of requests. Anyhow, here it is. Goodnight!
I hope you enjoyed. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!
The “Black” Baron
Feb 25, 2011
Tonight I got frustrated with that Tennis magazine job…poor source pics. Anyhow, I decided to finish up “The Black Baron“. The sneak peak I posted yesterday. Obviously Barack Obama was the perfect fit. This was a pretty intense manipulation. I did a good bit of research on The Red Baron to try and assemble a uniform that looked authentic. I used a mess of source images on this one. I totally lost count. I literally spliced pieces of leather together to make his coat and there was a lot of texture reproduction. It’s about 95% complete. I see several little things that need tweaking but I’ll do that later.
I hope you enjoyed. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!
